An articulated truck is a heavy-duty, off-road dump truck used to haul large quantities of material like rock, dirt, and aggregate on large, undeveloped jobsites. They are the primary hauling vehicle in major earthmoving operations.

Articulated Trucks are designed exclusively for off-road use with features like all-wheel drive, high ground clearance, and an articulation pivot between the cab and dump body. Standard (or Rigid) Dump Trucks are primarily for on-road use and lack the off-road capability of an ADT.

It is called articulated because of the pivot joint or 'articulation hinge' located behind the cab. This allows the front section (tractor) and the rear section (dump body) to move independently, which helps keep all wheels on the ground for maximum traction on severely uneven terrain.
